Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications of pregnancy in the United States. Controversy exists regarding GDM screening and diagnosis; however, medical nutrition therapy, glucose monitoring, physical activity and if necessary, medication are the most accepted management strategies. Other important issues in GDM include weight management, food safety and cultural considerations. This webinar will discuss the definition, diagnosis and management of GDM, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ evidence-based GDM nutrition practice guideline. Through the use of case studies, the participant will learn how to incorporate the Nutrition Care Process into various practice settings.

  • Describe the current definition, screening, and diagnostic criteria of GDM.
  • Identify key components in the management of GDM.
