Journal Launches New Author Guidelines

Substantial updates to the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Information for Authors have been made to create a venue featuring dynamic content for researchers, authors, practitioners, students and the dietetics and allied health care communities.

Key revisions include:

  • A condensed category of research articles including four manuscript types (Original Research, Review, Commentary and Research Editorial) with updated submission requirements.
  • Study design checklists will now be required by authors upon submission of Original Research and Review articles. The implementation of checklists is in part to keep up-to-date with trends in research reporting and to help researchers and authors identify study design (observational, experimental, qualitative) and include critical components required for a quality manuscript. In addition they will help facilitate the peer-review process.
  • Inclusion of survey data requirements, including the use of online surveys and guidelines for reporting survey outcomes rates using standard definitions and metrics.
  • The transition of two article types – Case Study and Emerging Science and Translational Applications – to the practice applications category to provide a more robust representation of issues pertaining to the practice of dietetics.

Complete Information for Authors.

Important note for authors currently drafting manuscripts:

For authors currently drafting research manuscripts based on the Journal's guidelines prior to April 1, you may submit your manuscripts under what is now Original Research and Review until May 31. In the cover letter for your submission, indicate the article category (Original Research, Review, Qualitative Research, Research and Practice Innovations or Research and Professional Brief) for which your manuscript was drafted and the new study design checklist requirement will be waived. Authors will still be prompted to upload a checklist upon submission, but a file indicating that the manuscript is based on the Journal's guidelines prior to the update can be uploaded in place of the checklist.

Beginning June 1, all manuscripts must meet the new submission requirements.
