S.C. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Celebrates National Nutrition Month and Public Policy

More than 25 members of the South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics participated in the affiliate's State Public Policy Day, March 5 at the capitol in Columbia. At the meeting SCAND learned of reimbursement opportunities for Academy members and discussed the development of their Public Policy Partners Program.

Dr. Marion Burton, director of the Department of Health and Human Services, and his colleagues returned this year to SCAND's Public Policy Day to provide vital updates on the South Carolina Obesity Initiative, including steps the state's registered dietitian nutritionists can take to enroll as Medicaid providers for the treatment of obesity.

SCAND is in the process of creating a statewide advocacy program called the South Carolina Public Policy Partners. SCAND members are looking forward to development of the public policy partners program, as well as the 2015 SCAND Public Policy Day.
