USDA: Americans Are Choosing Healthier Foods

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service indicates American adults are consuming fewer calories away from home; ingesting fewer calories from total fat and saturated fat; eating more fiber; and overall consuming less total calories.

In its report, ERS analyzed intake data from 2005 to 2010 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which collects individual and household data on health topics via questionnaire, lab work and physical exams. Highlights indicate:

  • Calories consumed through food away from home dropped by 127 calories per day, and the average person ate three fewer meals and 1.5 fewer snacks per month away from home.
  • Daily caloric intake declined by 78 calories per day.
  • Compared with 2007, the percentage of working-age adults who believed they have the ability to change their body weight increased in 2010 by 3 percentage points.
  • Working-age adults placed increased importance on nutrition when choosing items to purchase.

The Academy continues to promote and support policies that make the healthy choice the easy choice though menu labeling and nutrition education in federal food assistance programs, and improved nutrition standards in schools via implementation of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
