Medicare Issues Final Physician Fee Schedule for 2014

After delays due to the recent government shutdown, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has finalized updates to payment policies and payment rates for services furnished under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. These rules affect registered dietitian nutritionists who are Medicare providers.

Once again, providers may be facing steep across-the-board reductions in payment rates, based on the sustainable growth rate formula that was adopted in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. While overall payment rates to RDNs are projected to increase by 1 percent without congressional intervention, Medicare payment rates to providers paid under the PFS for services in 2014 will be reduced by 20 percent. Since 2003, Congress has stepped in at the last minute to avert the cuts.

While proposals are under development within Congress for a permanent repeal of the SGR, it is not known whether Congress will take action on such proposals before the end of the year. Although the rule is nearly a month late, it is still scheduled for implementation January 1, 2014.

Learn about changes in the 2014 PFS relevant to RDNs in the December issue of the Academy's MNT Provider newsletter, scheduled for publication later this month.
