SNAP Families Lose 21 Meals Each Month

On November 1, 47 million people - half of whom are children - saw a decrease in their SNAP benefits, equating to about $36 per month, or 21 meals per month. This cutback in SNAP benefits is due to the expiration of the 2009 economic stimulus package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. As Congress discusses the fate of the Farm Bill, SNAP could be subjected to even deeper cuts.

The Academy released a statement on the effect of the November 1 cuts, reaffirming its support for SNAP and its commitment to reducing food insecurity. The decrease in benefits will impact communities across the nation.

During the Farm Bill conference committee debate, the Academy continues to advocate for strong nutrition programs, including SNAP. This committee is charged with negotiating the differences between the House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill, which propose drastically different funding for nutrition programs.

As the Farm Bill is debated, the Academy has been reaching out to affiliates and targeted dietetic practice group members in each state with a Farm Bill conferee, to garner support for nutrition programs in the bill.
