Member Honored by American Public Health Association

Academy Member Geri Henchy, MPH, RD, received the American Public Health Association's Sarah Samuels Award at APHA's recent annual meeting. The award recognizes outstanding contributions for policy, advocacy, and evaluation in public health nutrition.

As the director of nutrition policy and early childhood programs at the Food Research and Action Center, Henchy's determination and perseverance have had a positive impact on nutrition policy at many levels. She was a founding member of the Academy's Hunger and Malnutrition dietetic practice group, the predecessor to today's Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPG, and has long been a tireless advocate for childhood nutrition.

Henchy's efforts have focused on improving policies that will ultimately improve the nutrition and health of low-income individuals and families and eradicate domestic hunger. She served as a member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee to Review the Child and Adult Care Food Program Meal Requirements, which created nutrition standards to bring meals into compliance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. She also serves on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Management Improvement Task Force, has been an active participant in APHA's Food & Nutrition Section, and currently chairs the section's policy committee.
