FNCE 2013: Lively, Unforgettable

The Academy's 2013 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas, was an unforgettable gathering of Academy members and other experts from all areas of food and nutrition.

At the Opening Session, Academy President Dr. Glenna McCollum, MPH, RDN, said: "Our country needs the strong, confident voices of the Academy to speak up, speak out and lead," and added: "We can either be swept away by change, or be an agent of change – and I choose the latter."

Keynote speaker Betty Nguyen gave an inspiring talk on the importance of humanitarian work, saying: "No matter how much you have, helping those in need will be the most rewarding thing you experience."

The Member Showcase spotlighted leaders in the dietetics profession and the Academy, and featured a unique multimedia presentation by artist Erik Wahl, who showed how his paintings seamlessly become a visual message and a stunning picture of lasting success. "If your actions inspire other to do more, dream more, be more, then you are a leader," he said.

At the Closing Session, keynote speaker Jeff Arnold, the founder of WebMD and co-founder of, and Academy member Ashley Koff, RD, conducted a lively dialogue on empowering consumers at the intersection of social media and health care. "One day," Arnold said, "I hope all health professionals are digital care givers."

FNCE participants took to social media in record numbers: By 11 a.m. Sunday, October 20, #FNCE was the most popular trending topic on Twitter – where it remained for the entire day.
