World Food Day: Academy Members Address Food Insecurity

October 16 is World Food Day, offering the opportunity to strengthen national and international solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and draw attention to achievements in food security and agricultural development. Food and nutrition insecurity is a mega issue for the Academy's House of Delegates, and Academy members are working to help eradicate food insecurity in communities throughout the country.

World Food Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1979. This year's theme is Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.

The Academy recognizes that hunger continues to be a worldwide problem of staggering proportions. The position paper Nutrition Security in Developing Nations: Sustainable Food, Water and Health states that access to adequate amounts of safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food at all times is a fundamental human right.
