House Passes Bill to Keep Intravenous Drugs Safe

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Drug Quality and Security Act, which will give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration more authority to regulate companies that compound sterile drugs, including intravenous nutrient solutions, and ship them across state lines. Many Academy members treat patients in clinical settings with intravenous nutrient solutions, and this bill is a significant achievement in ensuring that these solutions are safe.

The Drug Quality and Security Act was developed in response to the fungal meningitis outbreak in 2012 that led to the deaths of 50 people and sickened 700 more. The outbreak was traced to a tainted steroid sold by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill later this fall. The Academy has supported the bill from the beginning, since it is critical to make sure drugs and intravenous nutrients are safe.
