Implementation of School Meal Standards

The Pew Charitable Trust asked more than 3,000 school food authorities how implementation of new school meals is going. Results indicate that, by the end of the school year, 94 percent are expected to meet the new standards.

Academy members working in school nutrition continue to make healthy food changes, regulated by the HHFKA. Nearly 31 million children who eat school meals on a daily basis are impacted by these new standards. The results of Pew’s report, "Serving Healthy Meals: Despite challenges, schools meet USDA meal requirements," indicate 91 percent of schools faced one or more challenges to achieving full implementation by the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

The data also provides a look at possible solutions to challenges faced by school nutrition professionals, like upgrading kitchen equipment, infrastructure and staff training.

The Academy has signed a letter of support for the School Food Modernization Act, which would provide loans and grants to schools to help schools acquire new equipment to prepare healthier, more nutritious meals for students.
