Academy Lobbies Capitol Hill for Robust Funding for Ryan White Nutrition Services

Academy staff joined partners from food and nutrition agencies nationwide last week to advocate on Capitol Hill for funding for nutrition services in the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. Many Academy members work for organizations that provide home-delivered meals and medical nutrition therapy to people living with HIV/AIDS, which are considered to be among the "core medical services" that can be funded by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.

Due for reauthorization at the end of this month, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program acts as a "payer of last resort" by filling in gaps in care not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Because the law does not contain any "sunset" provisions (i.e. a stipulation that the program be terminated at the end of its authorization period), the program will continue to operate even if it expires.

However, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program will still be susceptible to funding reductions during the annual appropriations process. For this reason, the Academy and its partners spoke with staff in the offices of leaders on the House Appropriations Committee about the importance of nutrition services and "food as medicine." We will continue this important work as the budget process moves forward. For more information, see the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program issue brief.
