Members Join Sen. Heitkamp to Visit Federal Nutrition Programs

Academy champion and 2013 Public Policy Workshop speaker Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) recently linked up with Academy members to visit two federal nutrition education and school meals programs sites. She observed how engaging programming can help North Dakotans make healthy food choices.

Heitkamp joined Academy member Megan Ness, MS, RD, to participate in a SNAP-Ed class coordinated through the North Dakota State University Extension Service's Family Nutrition Program. Afterward, the Senator issued a press release highlighting the impact of nutrition education.

The Senator also visited a Bismarck elementary school to hear from school nutrition staff on the impact of the new school meal patterns on students. Academy member and LPPC Chair Karen Ehrens, RD, LRD, attended the meeting to show her support of school nutrition programs and discuss successes and challenges with Sen. Heitkamp and company.

After participating in the engaging nutrition education class the Senator said: "This program is helping families learn about how to cook affordable, healthier meals for their kids, offering a crucial lifeline so North Dakota's struggling children don't go hungry."

It is critical that legislators make the connection between dollars well spent on nutrition interventions and improving health. Academy members are encouraged to invite their members of Congress to visit their site to demonstrate the importance of nutrition programs and services.
