Nutrition Programs Are the Focal Point in House Farm Bill Debate

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $40 billion cut to the programs authorized in the nutrition title of the Farm Bill. These cuts would deny millions of Americans access to food from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs and decrease overall funding for its corresponding nutrition education program, SNAP-Ed.

By a narrow margin, the House passed a bill that addresses only nutrition programs typically authorized by the Farm Bill. The $40 billion cuts to SNAP and SNAP-Ed is 10 times the amount proposed in the Senate version of the Farm Bill.

To reach a final Farm Bill, first the House must take procedural vote to combine their "farm only" and "nutrition only" Farm Bills into one comprehensive bill. Then the difference between the Senate and the House bills must be reconciled by a Conference Committee. Once the committee agrees on the terms of the Farm Bill, it will be voted on in the House and Senate.

The Academy will be closely monitoring the members appointed to this committee and working to strengthen support for nutrition programs. As the situation unfolds, the Academy will provide updates and activate members.

Thanks to Academy members for taking action to support nutrition programs. Leading up to the vote, members wrote letters to the editor and editorials; held in-person meetings; and made phone calls. Just last week, Academy members sent action alerts to all 435 House offices. If your Congressman voted against cuts to nutrition programs, please thank him or her.
