Affiliate Members Are Taking the Lead on Obesity Advocacy

Sixteen in-district meetings have been held with members of Congress to discuss the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act. Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Illinois affiliates recently reported back their successes.

Members in Pennsylvania met with Representative Joe Pitts during the August work period. They shared the important role registered dietitian nutritionists play in a variety of circumstances, especially in the fight against obesity. Academy members JoAnn Ott-Slenker, MBA, RD, LDN; Rachel Kingsley, MBA, RD, LDN, CDE; and Ilona Garrity, MBA, RD, CNSC, LDN, were encouraged by the discussion and questions.

Illinois members recently met with another member of Congress to discuss the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act. Lindsay Sawyer, MPH, MB, RD, LDN; Lisa Eaton Wright, MS, RDN, LDN; and Gary Libretti Jr., MS, RDN, LDN, CSCS, met with Rep. Jan Schakowsky.

Thanks to the Academy's political action committee ANDPAC, 16 Connecticut members attended a wine and cheese reception for Rep. Rosa DeLauro. Members spoke with the Congresswoman about the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act and other issues pertaining to the profession. Everyone enjoyed the event so much that it went well beyond the scheduled time. Academy members agreed that "she is a dynamite Congresswoman and a wonderful person."
