Issue of Hunger Highlighted During September

According to a new report from USDA, one in six Americans (or 48.9 million) lived in households that struggled against hunger in 2012. September is Hunger Action Month, spotlighting the important issue of food insecurity in America, and offering a variety of opportunities to get involved and end hunger from the Academy and other organizations.

The September/October 2013 edition of Food & Nutrition Magazine is dedicated to the important issue of hunger, featuring:

  • Top Hunger Organizations: There are few initiatives that inspire as much collaborative spirit as the fight against hunger. As communities engage to provide sustainable solutions and educate others about food security, Food & Nutrition Magazine celebrates Hunger Action Month with a nod to organizations who champion the cause of food for all.
  • A Tale of Two Food Deserts: Learn how mobile food banks are bringing fresh groceries directly to food-insecure families, whether they live in urban food deserts or sparsely populated farmland.
  • Closing the Culture Gap: Learn why truly understanding the perspective of a food-insecure client – especially a person from a culture different than your own – can result in a more successful outcome for you and the client alike.

Combating Global Nutrition Insecurity in Developing Nations [Infographic]: People should have consistent access to an appropriately nutritious diet of food and water, coupled with a sanitary environment, adequate health services and care that ensure a healthy and active life for all. In collaboration with Feeding America through an educational grant from the National Dairy Council, Kids Eat Right recently hosted a series of six hunger webinars as part of the Future of Food project. The purpose of the webinars is to help increase awareness about hunger as a public health issue as well as help equip Academy members with the knowledge and skills needed to provide effective nutrition education to food-insecure people.

During the month of September, the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks unites to urge individuals to take action in their communities. Hunger Action Month seeks to create a movement that has a real and lasting impact to help end hunger in America. Get involved through social media or take the SNAP Challenge to see if you could eat on just $4.50 per day.

Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign strives to end childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. Food Research and Action Center
The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) offers a legislative action center and a variety of resources, information and data all related to ending eradicating hunger and undernutrition in the United States.
