New School Year, New School Breakfast – Get Ready!

This school year millions of children around the country will be eating healthier breakfasts thanks to the rollout of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. As a parent, nutrition professional or health advocate, are you ready?

In 2012, participation in the National School Breakfast Program increased by an impressive 5 percent from the previous year, serving 12.8 million students daily. This school year will bring changes to the increasingly popular program, as standards are updated as part of the 2010 Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. These changes include only offering low-fat or fat-free milk and requiring that half of the grains are whole grain-rich. The new breakfast standards ensure a healthy start for millions of children participating in the program.

The Academy, including experts from the School Nutrition Services dietary practice group, has been involved in the process from the beginning and will continue to follow and provide feedback to U.S. Department of Agriculture on the implementation of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
