Academy Affiliates and DPGs Stand Up for the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act

Leaders in affiliates and the Weight Management dietary practice group are hitting the ground running to advocate for treatment for seniors who suffer from obesity. Academy members are meeting with their Senators and Representatives to underscore the importance of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act.

The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act would increase seniors’ access to intensive behavioral therapy for obesity. The Academy is avidly advocating all around the country for this bill to ensure older Americans receive multidisciplinary, coordinated care to manage obesity. Notably, the bill would allow registered dietitian nutritionists to independently bill for services outside of, but in conjunction with, the primary care setting.

Thanks to ANDPAC, Wisconsin affiliate members attended a fundraiser and spoke face to face with Senator Tammy Baldwin (Wis.). With the senator, the members discussed the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act's role in the fight against obesity.

Wisconsin's neighbors in Illinois visited with their Representative, John Shimkus (Ill.), in his in-district office to also request support for this bill. Other affiliates have also met with their members of Congress, including Iowa, Georgia, Kansas and Pennsylvania.

Additionally, the Weight Management DPG leaders flew to Washington, D.C. to meet with 12 members of Congress, most of who are on the House Committee on Ways and Means, a group that will be a major player in passing this bill. See pictures from the events.

But advocacy does not stop there. Do your part: Tell your members of Congress about this important bill.
