Are High Levels of Caffeine Intake Harmful?

The Institute of Medicine recently held a two-day workshop examining the health effects of caffeine consumption in food and dietary supplements including "energy drinks." With millions of Americans consuming caffeine every day, understanding the potential hazards of caffeine is critical.

The IOM workshop examined epidemiological toxicological clinical literature to discuss potential health hazards associated with caffeine. Experts also identified gaps in the literature to determine future research opportunities.

One of the issues discussed at this meeting was labeling of caffeine content on food products. The Academy is gathering experts to evaluate the evidence regarding front and back food package labeling, which will include a discussion on caffeine content labeling.
