Nutrition Champions in Congress Fight Against Global Food Insecurity

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (Minn.), with Rep. Aaron Schock (Ill.), recently introduced in Congress the Global Food Security Act (H.R. 2822) to help small-scale farmers, women and children improve food security in their communities.

Around the world, 870 million people suffer from chronic food insecurity and more than 200 million children are chronically malnourished. According to the World Food Programme: "If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million." The Global Food Security Act directs the president to develop a multi-agency strategy for global food and nutrition and calls for a renewed focus on women, nutrition and small-scale farmers.

Many of the co-sponsors of the bill are champions for global and domestic hunger issues, including Reps. Jim McGovern (Mass.), Gwen Moore (Wis.), Jared Polis (Colo.) and Jan Schakowsky (Ill.). The Academy has developed relationships with many of these food access advocates through the Academy's Political Action Committee.

Academy member experts recently updated the Academy position paper on global food security. The authors believe consistent access to safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food and water is a fundamental human right and is particularly important in helping developing nations achieve food and nutrition security.
