House Committee Moves Forward on Permanent 'Doc Fix'

The important Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives advanced legislative reforms to the current physician fee schedule that would repeal flawed and unpopular cuts required under the Sustainable Growth Rate.

The schedule would be replaced with a system the committee says will "promote the highest quality of care for seniors and provide fair payment to doctors [as a] … culmination of an over two-year effort to fix SGR that is the product of a thoughtful, bipartisan, transparent and fair process." Many steps remain before the bill would become law, but passage through committee represents a significant milestone.

Because registered dietitian nutritionists who are Medicare providers are paid under the Physician Fee Schedule, any effort to replace the SGR affects Academy members. The Academy recognizes the need for a long-term solution instead of last-minute, stop-gap legislation passed year after year. The Academy will continue working toward solutions that address the needs of RDNs as non-physician providers paid under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and best value effective interdisciplinary health-care teams.
