IOM Examines Role of National Standards for Nutrition Education

The Institute of Medicine recently analyzed the merits and potential uses of a set of national nutrition education curriculum standards and learning objectives for elementary and secondary schoolchildren. These discussions will likely provide a framework for lawmakers to consider using these nutrition education standards in schools.

Given widespread and growing interest in nutrition education, the U.S. Department of Agriculture asked IOM to conduct a workshop to identify promising practices in nutrition education; consider the most important attributes of standards for nutrition education; and suggest approaches to build acceptance and use of such standards among educators.

The Academy believes establishing a standard for nutrition education is critical to creating a healthy population. More information on the Academy's position on nutrition in schools is available in the position paper on school nutrition services.
