Academy Connects with Nutrition Supporter Rep. Grisham

Thanks to the Academy's Political Action Committee, staff recently attended a fundraiser for Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (N.M.), a supporter of food, nutrition and education programs for older Americans and hungry populations. With the help of ANDPAC, Academy members can play an active role in establishing meaningful relationships with influential members of Congress.

ANDPAC once again increased the Academy's presence and visibility on Capitol Hill when staff met with Rep. Grisham, a new member of the House Committee on Agriculture and the Subcommittee for Department Operations, Oversight and Nutrition. She is an advocate for vital nutrition education programs that are typically led by Academy members.

Lujan Grisham is known for her strong advocacy for older Americans. Prior to her election, she worked as the New Mexico aging commissioner, responsible for implementing programs to improve the livelihood of older adults and those with disabilities. She has indicated her stance on maintaining the health of older Americans through proper food, nutrition and education. Since the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act may be introduced in this Congress, Rep. Lujan Grisham will be key to ensure the Academy's recommendations for nutrition services and programs are included.

Most recently, Rep. Lujan Grisham has been a vocal champion for the Academy on the Farm Bill, which authorizes food assistance and nutrition education for vulnerable populations. After sequestration forced states to cancel several nutrition education programs, Lujan Grisham supported an amendment that would fund those programs and offered another amendment to retain funding for nutrition education.

Academy members can help develop and deepen relationships with members in Congress in two ways:

  1. Donate to ANDPAC to help the Academy and its members establish meaningful relationships with congressional leaders.
  2. Attend a fundraiser for your member of Congress to tell him or her about the important role registered dietitian nutritionists play in improving health.
