Academy and Advocacy Partners Encourage Better Detection, Screening for Diabetes

The Academy and its partners have urged the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to recommend early detection and intervention for type 2 diabetes and targeted screening for gestational diabetes. The USPSTF publishes highly regarded, science-based recommendations that form the foundation for national and local policies and clinical decision making.

Together with the Diabetes Advocacy Alliance, the Academy recently sent two letters to the USPSTF in response to a draft research plan on screening for type 2 diabetes: (1) impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance and (2) a draft recommendation statement on screening for gestational diabetes.

The Academy's comment letters request that USPSTF's recommendations include an explicit evaluation of early detection of and intervention for type 2 diabetes through consideration of intermediate outcomes data, and targeted screening for undiagnosed diabetes at the first prenatal visit among pregnant women with risk factors for diabetes.

The Academy is an active member of the Diabetes Advocacy Alliance - a coalition of 19 organizations representing patient, professional and trade associations; other nonprofit organizations; and corporations united in the desire to change the way diabetes is viewed and treated in this country.
