Research Works: Join Dietetics Practice Based Research Network

Millicent Simmons, MSA, RD, LDN, is a member of the Academy's Dietetics Practice Based Research Network. She was a participant in the North Carolina Blue-Cross Blue Shield study and an Oversight Group member.

Simmons says she participated in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina study to "make a difference for the field of nutrition in the community and with leaders of the community." She felt the study helped individuals believe in themselves and introduced them to the concept of a registered dietitian nutritionist.

"Participating in the study helped me show as well as tell that the field of nutrition is helpful for prevention. It also increased the number of patients who come to my practice. Participating in the Oversight Group allowed me to meet dietitians on the national, state and local level. It was helpful to be involved in making meaningful decision for research projects."

Simmons encourages everyone to get involved in research because it brings about outcomes through experience.
