What Will Happen to Vital Nutrition Programs in the Farm Bill?

Critical programs like SNAP – the largest federal nutrition assistance program – as well as the SNAP Nutrition Education Program and food and agriculture research are still waiting to be reauthorized after the House of Representatives failed to pass a comprehensive Farm Bill. This bill funds jobs for RDNs in community nutrition and nutrition research, and provides food for more than 45 million Americans.

House leadership is still trying to find the best way forward, and four scenarios are being tossed around as possible solutions.

  1. The House takes up the Senate's version of the Farm Bill.
  2. The House sends the current House Farm Bill back through the Agriculture Committee to move it back on to the floor for debate. The bill would have to change to rally more support from many representatives.
  3. Congress may try to pull the nutrition title out of the Farm Bill, and place it on the floor as a standalone bill.
  4. Congress could try for another one-year extension of the current law. However, Senate leaders have said they do not want a one-year extension.

The Academy's strategy will depend highly on which of the four options moves ahead in the House. Please be on the lookout for updates as the Farm Bill process unfolds.
