Academy Supports Congressional Leaders Who Stand Up for Food Access, Prevention

The Academy recently had the opportunity to meet with three longtime supporters of nutrition and dietetics, thanks to the Academy’s political action committee ANDPAC. From California to Iowa to Minnesota, the Academy furthered its relationships and conveyed important messages to Reps. Javier Becerra (Calif.), Bruce Braley (Iowa) and Betty McCollum (Minn.).

ANDPAC once again supported Rep. Becerra through his political action committee, Leadership for Today and Tomorrow. Rep. Becerra has been a proponent of access to healthy, safe and affordable food. Nearly three in 10 residents in his district live in poverty and one-third of the district’s families are dealing with hunger and fear of not being able to feed their children. Mr. Becerra is recognized for his collaborative bipartisan style.

Similarly, Rep. Braley has built a reputation for his advocacy for increasing funding for prevention services for Medicare and Medicaid programs. Rep. Braley sponsored the Access to Frontline Health Care Act 2013 that would ensure communities have access to a wide array of health-care services. Rep. Braley co-chairs the Quality Care Coalition to Promote Value in Health Care that works closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This coalition functions similarly to a congressional caucus. Rep. Braley has also cosponsored all significant legislation that the Academy supports. He was the 2010 recipient of the Academy’s Public Policy Leadership Award.

Rep. McCollum has participated in the Academy’s legislative effort "Take Your Congressman to Work" day in partnership with the Minnesota Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Rep. McCollum serves on the House Appropriation Committee. ANDPAC has previously supported Rep. McCollum for her advocacy efforts on the Farm Bill legislation and improving the nation’s health-care system. She has been a strong supporter of federal nutrition programs that provide numerous opportunities for dietetics professionals. Most recently, Rep. McCollum worked closely with the Academy on language that would allow SNAP benefits to be used for the homebound elderly. She was previously featured in Eat Right Weekly for a House floor speech on the need for healthy and affordable food access for all.
