Senators Ask Nickelodeon to Stop Marketing Unhealthy Foods to Kids

U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.), Tom Harkin (Iowa) and Dick Durbin (Ill.) have written to Nickelodeon requesting that the children's entertainment network prohibit advertisements that market unhealthy food to children.

The Academy applauds members of Congress for sending the letter, especially given the childhood obesity epidemic and the Institute of Medicine's research linking television advertisements to children's food and beverage preferences.

The Academy and its partners sent a similar letter to Nickelodeon last year, urging strong nutrition standards for the company's food marketing to children across all types of media channels.

The Academy is a member of the Food Marketing Workgroup, which is dedicated to eliminating harmful food marketing to children by actively identifying, investigating and advocating changes to marketing practices and policies that undermine children's health.
