Members of Congress Urge President to Reaffirm Commitment to Global Nutrition and Hunger

Academy nutrition champions Rep. Betty McCollum (Minn.) and Rep. Jim McGovern (Mass.) have led 79 congressmen in asking President Obama to reaffirm the United States' commitment to global nutrition and food security.

Global leaders gathered at the Nutrition for Growth summit to commit to tackling malnutrition. Worldwide, nearly 200 million children are chronically malnourished and suffer from physical and cognitive damage.

The letter to the president includes three requests:

  1. Pledge support for plans in poor countries to strengthen and expand nutrition interventions.
  2. Develop a nutrition strategy and coordination.
  3. Commit to transparency and accountability by reporting and tracking U.S. investments in nutrition programs and accounts.

It is the position of the Academy that all people should have consistent access to an appropriately nutritious diet of food and water, coupled with a sanitary environment, adequate health services and care that ensure a healthy and active life for all household members. The Academy supports policies, systems, programs and practices that work with developing nations to achieve nutrition security and self-sufficiency while being environmentally and economically sustainable. As this important initiative develops, the Academy will identify member leaders to help shape strategies and outcomes.
