Sequestration and Senior Nutrition: Painful Cuts to Important Programs

According to the Administration on Aging's recent announcement, Older Americans Act nutrition programs will suffer a loss of more than $51 million during Fiscal Year 2013. Many Academy members work for OAA nutrition programs, helping seniors remain healthy and independent in their homes.

Last week, the Administration on Aging released new tables that reflect the final Fiscal Year 2013 sequestration cuts on Older Americans Act programs. These programs, including congregate dining and home-delivered meals programs, help ensure seniors who might otherwise be at risk of malnutrition have access to healthy meals.

The Academy is working closely with the Meals on Wheels Association of America on aging and nutrition issues. An MOWAA infographic captures the devastating effects of sequestration on older adults.

The Academy recognizes hunger and nutrition through the life cycle as two of its top legislative and public policy priorities. More information on the Academy's work on the Older Americans Act can be found in our OAA issue brief.
