Hospital Farm Awarded for Innovative Approach to Nutrition Care

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, in Ann Arbor, Mich., recently received the Catholic Health Association's 2013 Achievement Citation for "innovative, synergistic approach to healing and wellness" - a 20-acre farm on the hospital's grounds that "uses organic methods, provides patients, volunteers and visitors an experiential way to understand the link between fresh air, exercise, fresh food, good nutrition and good health." The hospital's director of clinical nutrition is Academy member Lisa McDowell, MS, RD, CSSD, CNSD.

According to McDowell: "We have regular customers who don't have family members in the hospital, but they just come in to our farmers' market because they love that the greens are not treated with pesticides and that they're freshly picked that morning before market, and they just taste so great."

The Catholic Health Association created a video about the "Farm at St. Joe" to accompany the hospital's award. "Everybody is so proud of the project, because the hospital is doing something to make a difference," McDowell says in the video.
