Medicare Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity Benefit

During the June 4 CMS Physicians, Nurses & Allied Health Professionals Open Door Forum, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced the Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity benefit currently cannot be provided in a group setting. The billing code established for the benefit (G0447) was valued as an individual service, so its use is limited to individual counseling sessions. CMS has received feedback from the provider community expressing concerns about this policy and is actively considering an option for group settings.

The Academy has shared with CMS its support of a group code option for this service, as well as the need for national clarification on the ability to bill for multiple units on the same day of service. The Academy also continues its efforts to get registered dietitians recognized as direct providers of this benefit. We will continue to provide updates on these issues as they become available.

For more information on the Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity benefit, visit www.eatright.org/mnt or email Marsha Schofield, MS, RD, LD, director of nutrition services coverage.
