USDA and EPA Launch U.S. Food Waste Challenge

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency have launched the U.S. Food Waste Challenge to change how Americans think about and manage food and food waste in this country. Registered dietitian nutritionists work across multiple sectors and can help consumers and industry come up with innovative ways to reduce food waste.

Food waste in the United States is estimated at 30 to 40 percent of the food supply. The Food Waste Challenge brings together all points of the food chain – producer groups, processors, manufacturers, retailers, communities and other government agencies – to join the effort to reduce, recover and recycle food waste.

As part of its contribution to the U.S. Food Waste Challenge, USDA is initiating a range of activities, including reducing waste in the school meals program, educating consumers about food waste and food storage and developing new technologies to reduce food waste.

The Academy recognizes food waste as a larger sustainable food systems issue that could affect food security – a mega issue for the House of Delegates. However, food safety must be top of mind when counseling certain vulnerable populations, like the immunosuppressed, pregnant women, children or older adults. The Food Waste Challenge is an opportunity for registered dietitian nutritionists to educate clients and patients about meal planning to minimize food waste and encourage food safety to prevent illness.
