Millions of Older Americans Suffer from Hunger

The prevalence of food-insecure seniors is on the rise, according to a new report by Feeding America and the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger. Academy members can help.

The report indicates that food insecurity – defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life – among seniors grew by 50 percent between 2007 and 2011. The number of food insecure-seniors above age 60 more than doubled between 2001 and 2011.

The Academy is engaged on the issue of senior hunger through its efforts to reauthorize the Older Americans Act, which houses nutrition programs such as congregate dining and home meal delivery programs such as Meals on Wheels.

In addition, the Academy is advocating for hunger relief programs and policies in the Farm Bill, such as SNAP, Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program and Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which combined feeds millions of older Americans. Please support funding for strong nutrition programs in the Farm Bill.

The Academy's position on food and nutrition for older adults demonstrates the link between food insecurity and health.
