We Need Your Voice: Critical Nutrition Education and Food Assistance Programs in Jeopardy

Congress is debating cuts to nutrition education and food assistance programs that help reduce food insecurity in the United States. These programs are housed in the Farm Bill and provide employment for many registered dietitian nutritionists. Please take action to preserve these important programs.

In the Senate: Last week, the Senate returned from recess to continue debating the Farm Bill. Many harmful amendments to critical nutrition programs were filed but were not debated as Senators voted to contain debate on the Farm Bill by invoking cloture.

On Monday evening, the Senate passed a bipartisan Farm Bill which protected nutrition programs, among other things.

Thanks to members for all your efforts to pass this bill. Was your voice heard by your Senators? See how they voted.

In the House: We will need your help for a tough fight in the House, with debate set for the week of June 17. The House plans to debate cuts of up to $21 billion from the nutrition title (Title IV) of the Farm Bill. These cuts will massively impact the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and SNAP-Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed).

While the Academy advocates to protect vital nutrition programs, members of Congress value the voice of constituents. Will you join us and tell Congress that nutrition is important?

Please contact your Congressman today to help save these critical nutrition assistance programs.
