Franken Amendment Would Help Feed Hungry Seniors, People with Disabilities

Sen. Al Franken (Minn.) proposed an amendment during last week's Farm Bill debate that would allow homebound seniors and people with disabilities to use the food assistance program SNAP to purchase groceries through public or nonprofit grocery delivery organizations. This amendment passed the Senate with unanimous consent, and is also expected to be included in the House's version of the Farm Bill.

At least 2 million homebound seniors in the United States rely on family, friends and nonprofit organizations to assist them with basic needs like shopping for groceries or picking up prescriptions. If passed, this amendment will provide these individuals with more independence.

Whitney Brown, the Academy's director of legislation and policy, worked last year on this important piece of legislation when she was employed by Senator Franken's office. The Academy supported this amendment last year during Farm Bill debates, and did so again this year.

The Academy also supports the nutrition programs included in the Older American's Act, which aims to keep older adults independent and healthy. This piece of legislation aligns with the Academy's legislative and public policy priorities by helping Americans meet their nutrition needs through the life cycle.
