Academy Co-Hosts Washington Post's Future of Food Conference

For the second consecutive year, the Academy co-hosted the Washington Post's "Future of Food" forum May 22 in Washington, D.C. President Ethan A. Bergman, PhD, RDN, CD, FADA, made opening remarks at the conference, which was attended by approximately 150 leaders (including Academy members) in the fields of food, nutrition, science, education and industry.

The Academy co-hosted the forum, titled "Building a Sustainable Food System," with the National Dairy Council. Discussions ranged from technological innovations to make food more affordable and nutritious, to private-public partnerships that are leading the sustainable food movement in our country. Speakers included Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

In his remarks, President Bergman said:

Access to food is a basic and fundamental human right. We believe systematic and sustained actions are needed to achieve food and nutrition security for all. These actions include adequate funding and increased utilization of food and nutrition assistance programs, as well as innovative programs that support people's economic self-sufficiency. The Academy looks forward to the impact that today’s summit will have in helping consumers achieve sustainable access to nourishing food and to adequately feed their families.

President Bergman also contributed a guest posting to the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy's blog on the Academy's efforts in the areas of food security and sustainability. He wrote, in part: “The nutrition and dietetics profession will will work tirelessly toward achieving ecological sustainability and social responsibility in food, nutrition and health.”
