Summer Program Reduces Hunger in Communities When School is Out

The Summer Food Service Program can help communities address child hunger even after school doors close for the year.

SFSP could be made available to all 17 million children and adolescents who are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals, yet only a small fraction of these children and adolescents are served each year.

On May 27, Share our Strength will launch its "No Kid Hungry" campaign and release a variety of helpful resources to promote the program. These resources may be useful for registered dietitian nutritionists working in school systems, as well as those working to reduce food insecurity.

The Summer Food Service Program, reauthorized by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, is designed to assist children who rely on free and reduced-price breakfast or lunch during the school year to continue to have access to healthy food throughout the summer. According to the Academy's position paper "Child and Adolescent Nutrition Assistance Programs," SFSP serves meals to nearly 2 million of the 17 million eligible children and adolescents from families with low incomes, in settings such as schools, residential camps, nonprofit and religious organizations, and parks and youth sports programs.

The Academy's joint position with the Society for Nutrition Education and School Nutrition Association, "Comprehensive School Nutrition Services," provides an overview on how the program complements other school-based services.

Addressing food insecurity is a legislative priority area for the Academy. It was recently addressed by the House of Delegates and is a pillar of the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition dietetic practice group's work.
