CDC Finds Racial, Ethnic Disparities in Hypertension

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a report that supports well-documented racial and ethnic disparities among people with hypertension. The report, "Racial/Ethnic Disparities in the Awareness, Treatment and Control of Hypertension – United States, 2003–2010," is an important resource for Academy members working with patients with cardiovascular disease.

The report reinforces the need for continued implementation of proven, evidence-based strategies that improve blood pressure treatment and control for those with hypertension across all racial and ethnic groups and stages of disease.

Mexican-Americans were found to have lower awareness and treatment of hypertension compared to African-Americans and whites. Although African-Americans had the highest levels of hypertension awareness and treatment, this group had one of the lowest rates of blood pressure control.

One of the Academy's main legislative and public policy priority areas is prevention and treatment of chronic disease, including health care equity. In addition, the Academy's House of Delegates is committed to working to eliminate health disparities like those identified in the CDC report.

Academy staff are working with the Department of Health and Human Services' Million Hearts® initiative to improve cardiovascular health through public health strategies and policies that promote healthy lifestyles and behaviors, healthy environments and communities, and access to early and affordable detection and treatment.
