Determining Savings from Obesity Prevention Programs May Take Longer Than CBO's Current Standard

The Campaign to End Obesity recently issued a report concluding that the Congressional Budget Office should use a 75-year time frame, instead of the standard 10-year time frame, to better estimate costs and savings attributed to obesity prevention efforts.

According to the report, scoring prevention in a longitudinal fashion would more accurately estimate costs for obesity prevention policies.

The Academy continues to support policies and programs focused on preventing obesity through diet and lifestyle modification, including pushing for strong rules related to menu and vending machine labeling and providing commentary on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's proposed rule for snacks and competitive foods in schools.
