Academy Meets with CMS about Therapeutic Diet Orders

Academy President Ethan Bergman, PhD, RDN, CD, FADA, and the Academy's Policy Initiatives and Advocacy team met last week with officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Survey and Certification Group to discuss the proposed rule on Therapeutic Diet Orders.

As in the Academy's written comments to CMS on therapeutic diet orders, the Academy encouraged the agency to adopt strong definitions of "qualified dietitian" and "therapeutic diet" and clarify that RDNs in states without licensure are eligible to obtain privileges to independently order patient diets when finalizing CMS's proposed rule.

The Academy plans to continue to work with CMS to finalize the rule, a process that typically takes between three and six months after the open comment period ends. Members should continue to read Eat Right Weekly to stay up to date on the progress of the rule.

Learn more about the process of rule making and its importance.
