Ryan White Program Proves Successful

The Health Resources and Services Administration has released data showing 70 percent of patients receiving medical care funded by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program are virally suppressed, indicating the program is successful. Due in part to the Academy’s sustained advocacy in 2005-2006, medical nutrition therapy provided by registered dietitians was included as a "core medical service" within the program, which ensures that HIV/AIDS patients receiving care through Ryan White programs have access to a diet tailored to their unique medical needs.

Read the HRSA report.

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program is due for reauthorization by Congress this year; however, how the program aligns and is unique from services offered by the Affordable Care Act is not certain. The Academy will work diligently to ensure that funding for nutrition services, including MNT, is protected during the reauthorization. More information on nutrition intervention and HIV infection can be found in the Academy's position paper.
