April Is National Preceptor Month

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has declared April to be National Preceptor Month. This is an opportunity to recognize and thank practitioners who make the effort and take the time to create the next generation of dietetics professionals by teaching students in their workplace. And while it is a time to say "thank you," National Preceptor Month also kicks off the Academy's preceptor recruitment drive.

The goal is to recruit 2,500 preceptors across the U.S. so qualified students will be able to complete their education and become practitioners. To support preceptor recruitment efforts, the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics and the Academy are developing a searchable database to give individuals the ability to register as potential preceptors and indentify their geographical and specialty areas. Program directors and students who are Academy members will be able to use this database to search for preceptors.

To reach this goal and jumpstart the campaign, the Academy will host an affiliate challenge in April. When registering, practitioners will be able to note their state affiliation. The affiliate with the highest percentage of recruited preceptors will receive a prize awarded by the Academy at the end of National Preceptor Month.

More exciting projects and events will occur this year, with more information to come. Start now to plan strategies to recruit new preceptors.
