Registered Dietitian Day Contest Winner

In celebration of Registered Dietitian Day, the Academy asked members to share your most meaningful experiences in providing health and nutrition services as an RD. We received 150 thoughtful and inspirational testimonials that confirm and support the value of RD services. The winner is Carly Hill, RD, of San Diego, Calif. Ms. Hill will be featured on a banner in New York City's Times Square on Wednesday, March 13: RD Day.

More about the contest.

In response to the question "What is the most meaningful experience you’ve had in providing health and nutrition services as an, RD?" Carly Hill wrote:

Helping save the life of a young pediatric patient who had leukemia with medical nutrition therapy and using food as medicine. This was incredibly meaningful to me because I could relate to my patient. As an adolescent, I had conquered the same type of cancer, becoming a now 12-year survivor. My relatability and nutritional expertise not only gave my patient a sense of hope and support, but my nutritional tools and coaching also helped the patient overcome long-term nutritional complications after intensive treatments. It gave me a rush of adrenaline and put a huge smile on my face to know I helped save a life.

An Academy member since 2006, Carly Hill is a native of Yountville, in Napa County, Calif. She earned a bachelor's degree in food and nutritional science from San Diego State University, and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Delaware. Ms. Hill is a dietitian at Naval Medical Center San Diego, working primarily with children. Away from the hospital, Ms. Hill hosts wine tastings and dinners for her family's winery, Hill Family Estate, in Yountville. When she’s not advocating lifestyle and policy change, Ms. Hill enjoys traveling internationally, both for pleasure and her family’s business.

To Carly Hill, all contest entrants and all registered dietitians: Thank you for everything you do to help improve the health of Americans through food and nutrition.
