Lower-Calorie Foods Driving Growth in Restaurants

A new report indicates restaurants that offer more lower-calorie foods and beverages have experienced an increase in customer traffic, same-store sales and total food and beverage servings while those who don’t offer these choices have seen a decline in these categories.

The report, "Lower-Calorie Foods: It’s Just Good Business," was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and released by the Hudson Institute.

Restaurants have reason to provide lower-calorie options. Menu labeling required by the Affordable Care Act will mean consumers will see the calories associated with meals. A final rule is expected this year.

The Academy previously submitted comments urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to adopt strong, broadly applicable and effective menu labeling requirements.
