Report Shows Huge Improvements in Access to School Meals

According to the Food Research and Action Center's Breakfast Scorecard, more low-income children are gaining access to healthy breakfast meals being offered by more schools.

According to the Scorecard, for the first time, a majority of students who participated in the National School Lunch Program also participated in the School Breakfast Program during the 2011-2012 school year. In addition to the increased participation rate, more than 90 percent of schools that offered school lunches also offered school breakfast.

This data suggest a need for free and reduced-price school meals. The Academy plans to leverage this information during the appropriations process to fight for funding of school meals to provide children with healthy, nutritious food.
