Academy Meets with HHS and Comments on Essential Health Benefits Proposed Rule

The Academy urged comprehensive coverage of MNT and other nutrition services in a face-to-face meeting and recent comments on a proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regarding Essential Health Benefits.

The EHB will be mandatory for any health plan sold in state insurance exchanges; given the considerable variation among the benchmark plans chosen by states, the Academy urged HHS to require great clarity and specificity in defining several of the EHB categories.

Read the Academy’s comments and see information on State Health Insurance Exchanges.

The Academy and members of the obesity treatment community met with HHS officials to advocate for comprehensive services including nutrition counseling. Paramount in the discussion was a plea for HHS to designate obesity as a chronic disease, thereby allowing for multiple levels of management by skilled professionals across the continuum of care.

Leaders from the Academy, American Society for Bariatric Physicians, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, The Obesity Society and Campaign to End Obesity were present for the meeting.

In addition to submitting comments, the Academy signed onto comment submissions from the Obesity Care Continuum, Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease and the Association of Nutrition Services Agencies.

For information about the EHB and activities in your state, contact your state policy representative or reimbursement representative.
