AODA Co-Hosts Diabetes Conference in India

India and the United States are surpassed only by China in the number of people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The "Indo-U.S. Interdisciplinary Conference on Nutrition Practice Guidelines for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Sharing Evidence and Best Practices to Improve Health Outcomes," held November 17 to 18 in Chennai, India, addressed the burden of this disease in both countries.

Made possible by a grant from the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum and India's Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Academy and other U.S. experts met with authorities from India to exchange relevant research and diabetes care practices as well as to foster future collaborations.

Principal investigators for the conference were Dr. K.M. Venkat Narayan of Emory University and Dr. Nirmala Jesudason, AODA's Country Representative for India. Academy speakers included Marion Franz, MS, RD, CDE; Karmeen Kulkarni, MS, RD, BC-ADM, CDE; Esther Myers, PhD, RD, FADA; Reena Oza-Frank, PhD, MS-MPH, RD; and Naomi Trostler, PhD, RD. Other special U.S. guests included Judith Fradkin, MD, director of the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
