East Coast Copes with Superstorm Sandy

The Academy extends thoughts and prayers to everyone who has been affected by Superstorm Sandy, especially Academy members who live in the hardest hit areas in New Jersey and New York and surrounding states. We mourn the lives that have been lost while admiring the courage that residents of the stricken areas have shown in the face of this unprecedented disaster.

We encourage all members to support emergency organizations as they execute cleanup and rescue plans and set up outlets to provide information on the storm and its victims. To donate to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts visit

We as dietetics professionals can be of enormous help, not only to citizens in the hurricane-affected areas but also throughout the country who must deal with disasters that endanger the food and water supply. Let's all bring our expertise and knowledge to bear in encouraging people to follow simple but effective food-safety practices. Please share this life saving information on Keeping Food Safe During Emergencies with clients, friends and family members.

As of Tuesday afternoon, over 8 million Americans in 17 states are reported to be without power in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. In advance of the hurricane, the Academy began highlighting safety information on Friday, October 26, to Keep Food Safe During Emergencies and tips on What To Throw Out When the Power Goes Out, reaching over 12,000 Americans before they were affected by the storm and lost power. The Academy will continue to provide support and information as more is learned in the wake of Sandy.
