New Hospital Health Initiative Announced at FNCE

The 2012 Opening Session was the site of a special announcement by the Partnership for a Healthier America of a new health-care initiative that will affect registered dietitians, especially those who work in the hospital foodservice arena. More than a dozen chief executives and representatives of hospitals and health-care systems were present for the announcement.

The PHA Hospital Healthy Food Initiative will involve hospitals and systems in 24 states, representing 154 hospitals and serving more than 60 million meals per year.

“Over the next three years, each partner hospital will be increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables they buy; offering more healthy menu options for adults and children; keeping costs for those healthier options more affordable; and adjusting how foods are prepared and marketed,” said PHA’s chief executive officer Larry Soler.

“These hospitals represent merely the latest private sector change driven by your field,” Soler said. “From hotels to restaurants to food companies and child care standards, PHA is increasing healthy options at hundreds of millions of meals every year—and dietitians are at the core of each of those agreements.”
